Knurów is a city located in the Gliwice county, with an area of 33.95 square kilometres, inhabited by approximately 40,000 people. It is a very young city, as it was granted the city charter only in 1951. It is also the second city in Poland, second only to Sopot, whose executive body - despite a small number of inhabitants - is the president, not the mayor.
Knurów promotes itself using the slogan “Always on the way”. It is quite obvious and natural, as thanks to the closeness to A1 highway it is one of the best connected towns in the entire Metropolis GZM. New billboards with this slogan are currently located at 1 Maja Street facing Gliwice and at Szpitalna Street.
Jerzy Dudek, a former Poland’s national football team representative and goalkeeper in, inter alia, Liverpool F.C. and Real Madrid, started his football career in Concordia Knurów. He became an honorary citizen of this city. The day the ceremony was held, the former goalkeeper of the Polish national team went down to the coal mine, where his father once used to work, and then played a friendly match in the city.
One of the most characteristic landmarks of Knurów is the coal mine with a winding tower.
